What is DNS?

Without DNS, rather than punching www.butterscotch.com into your address bar to come visit us, you'd have to input a string of digits (216.40.32.39), called an IP address, to drop by and say hello. Not only are IP addresses hard to remember, they're not terribly easy to market. 216.40.32.39: Tasty Tech, Delicious Downloads doesn't have quite the same ring. That's where DNS comes in. - DNS has a couple of meanings.

- First, DNS stands for Domain Name System which was established to translate domain names into IP addresses.

- Next, DNS also stands for Domain Name Server which a special server that implements the system.

- DNS makes it possible for computers to connect on a network by typing in a domain name.

- Without DNS you'll have to remember an IP address, like 216.40.32.39, for every Web site you wanted to visit.
