Show Notes
- Phishing is an attempt to gather your confidential information by making you think an institution you trust is contacting you.
- People engaged in phishing precisely duplicate the web site of the institution they are targeting.
- The most common sites that are phished are banks, PayPal, Amazon, etc.
- You get an official-looking email asking you to login or confirm some information.
- A handy "link" to the institution is provided. All you have to do is click it.
- If you do, you go to a mockup site created by the phishers and put in your information then the bad guys will have it.
- Some rules to remember so you don't become a victim of phishing.
1. Reputable institutions don't email you asking you confirm confidential information.
2. Do NOT click on links that are in emails, unless they are from friends and not institutions.
3. A hyperlink can say it's taking you one place while taking you to another.
4. If you get an email that seems odd, visit the web site by typing in the URL in the address bar.
5. Call the institution and tell them about the email.
6. It's easy for someone to duplicate a web site by simply stealing the graphics and copying the text and colors.
