What's up (with the) Dock?

Pt. 3 of 10 | 2:38 |

Making the Move to Mac

Wednesday November 26, 2008
The Dock in Mac OSX functions somewhat like the Taskbar in Windows. You can customize the Dock to show the programs you access most frequently, you can hide it away when it's not being used, you can enable or disable neat Dock animations and more. In this episode, The Doc gets down with the Dock.

Show Notes

- The Dock is equivalent to Windows QuickLaunch bar. It holds program shortcuts you want to have quick access to and also holds icons for programs that are currently running on your machine.

- A small light in the reflection of a program's icon in the Dock indicates that the program is running.

- To add a program that is running to the Dock, simply right-click or Ctrl + click on the icon and select Keep in Dock.

- To remove an icon from the dock, either right-click or Ctrl + click and select Remove from Dock. An easier (and more amusing) way is to simply drag the icon onto your desktop where it disappears in a puff of smoke.

- To tweak the Dock, including how and where it's displayed on your desktop, how it behaves and to turn those nifty animations and icon zooming on or off, click on the Apple menu in the top left of your screen, hover over Dock and click on Dock Preferences...

- To hide the Dock so that it only appears when you mouse over it, go to the Apple menu, select Dock and choose Turn Hiding On.
