How can my computer do computer-y stuff without a C:, D: or other lettered drive? If you've come over to the Mac from Windows you're going to be surprised to find that there are no drive letters. You can have as many drives as you want and name them something that suits you.

- The Mac, and other UNIX-based systems, don't use drive letters.
- On your Mac you can name your drives anything you like.
- If you open Finder you'll see a list of drives on the left-hand side.
- Unlike PC's, you won't find any drive C or drive D.
- You can name your drives BACKUP or POLLY or JUNK or whatever you like.
- This allows you to give drives useful names like calling the drive you use for Time Machine backup "Time Machine."
- In Finder you can highlight each drive on the left side and see the contents in the main panel.
